Today we’re talking about something that often gets missed—elder neglect. And here’s the truth: it’s not always bruises or broken bones. In many cases, the signs are subtle, quiet, and easy to overlook if you don’t know what to watch for. That’s why this video is so important.

Let’s go over five hidden red flags that may point to elder neglect—especially in nursing homes, assisted living centers, or even at-home care situations.

Red flag number one: Unexplained weight loss.
If your loved one has noticeably lost weight, seems frail, or complains of being hungry, don’t ignore it. Sudden or steady weight loss can be a sign of poor nutrition or even dehydration. And while it could be caused by a medical issue, it’s also a common indicator that basic care is being neglected. Skipped meals, not enough fluids, or not helping someone eat—these are all forms of passive neglect.

Number two: Sudden changes in mood or behavior.
Has your loved one become withdrawn, anxious, agitated, or confused? Do they flinch when touched, avoid eye contact, or act fearful around certain staff members? These are emotional red flags. Elderly people—especially those with memory issues—may not be able to explain what’s happening. But their behavior often tells the story. Pay close attention.

Third red flag: Poor hygiene.
Neglect doesn’t always mean someone’s being hurt physically. It can mean that no one’s helping with daily needs. If your loved one smells bad, has greasy hair, overgrown nails, unchanged clothes, or appears unwashed, something is wrong. Everyone deserves the dignity of being clean, and proper hygiene is basic caregiving.

Fourth: Bedsores, also known as pressure ulcers.
These are injuries caused by staying in the same position for too long without being moved. They often form on the back, hips, heels, or shoulders. Not only are they painful, but they can also lead to serious infections. Bedsores are completely preventable with attentive care. If they’re showing up, it’s a clear sign that care is lacking.

And number five: Restricted access or unusual excuses from staff.
If you’re being discouraged from visiting, or staff are vague or defensive when you ask questions, be cautious. If you’re told your loved one is “too tired” or “not feeling up to it” every time you visit—especially without explanation—that could be a cover. Facilities should welcome family involvement, not hide from it.

Elder neglect isn’t always obvious, and it doesn’t always leave a physical mark. But over time, the damage can be devastating—physically, emotionally, and legally.

If your instincts are telling you something’s not right, listen to them. You’re not overreacting, and you’re not alone.
